About Syros

Syros or Syra is an island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea. It is located 144 km south-east of Athens. It is one the small Islands of the Cyclades Complex when it comes to size, but it’s approximately 22.000 inhabitants make it the most populous one.

The largest towns are Ermoupoli, Ano Syros, and Vari. The island’s capital, Ermoupoli, has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Piraeus. Other villages are Galissas, Foinikas, Pagos, Manna, Kini and Poseidonia.

Despite its size, Syros is the administrative and commercial center of the Cyclades. With its unique history, its rich culture and its impressive nature, Syros sends out a unique aura. The island connects the traditional with the cosmopolitan, the medieval with the urban and the Orthodox with the Catholic architecture and art in fascinating ways.

Once in Syros, the visitor gets the impression that he travels from one time to another at incredible speed, in a completely natural way that will impress him deeply.

The island experienced wealth, prosperity and a cultural boom in the 19th century mainly through shipbuilding and trade. Evidence of this prosperity are many beautiful buildings and town houses, like its famous town hall, the work of the German architect Ziller, as well as the theater and opera house.

The island is cosmopolitan, open, elegant, well-groomed. Many sandy beaches around the island, beautiful little villages and landmarks by the sea complete the picture.
